Complex brain goes back half a billion years

The oldest brain ever found in an arthropod ? a group of invertebrates that includes insects and crustaceans ? is surprisingly complex for its 520-million-year age, researchers report Wednesday.

The fossilized brain, found in an extinct arthropod from China, looks very similar to the brains of today's modern insects, said study researcher Nicholas Strausfeld, the director of the Center for Insect Science at the University of Arizona.

"The rest of the animal is incredibly simple, so it's a big surprise to see a brain that is so advanced, as it were, in such a simple animal," Strausfeld told LiveScience.

The discovery suggests that brains evolved a complex organization early on in history, he added.

The evolving insect brain
Arthropods include any animal with an exoskeleton, jointed legs and a segmented body, from lobsters to scorpions to beetles to butterflies. There is controversy about how these various creatures evolved, however. One theory holds that insects evolved from ancestors not unlike today's branchiopods, which are extremely simple crustaceans such as fairy shrimp and water fleas. Branchiopods have simpler brains than insects and higher crustaceans, Strausfeld said, so this theory of evolution holds that both higher crustaceans and insects evolved very similar complex brains after splitting off from this common branchiopod-like ancestor. [Dazzling Photos of Dew-Covered Insects]

Alternatively, all of these groups ? insects, branchiopods and higher crustaceans ? could have evolved from an ancestor with a complex brain, with branchiopods regressing later.

"So the question was, 'What was the early brain, what did it look like? Did it look simple or did it look complex?'" Strausfeld said.

That's not an easy question to answer, given that brains rarely get fossilized. But Strausfeld's earlier work on arthropod fossils convinced him it could be done. He just had to go to China, home of an amazing collection of stunningly preserved ancient fossils.

Last-minute discovery
In China's Yunnan province, paleontologists have long uncovered fossils from the Cambrian period, which ran from about 542 million to 488 million years ago. These fossils are very well-preserved.

For five days, Strausfeld and his colleagues poured through fossils, searching for dark silhouettes of preserved brains inside ancient arthropod heads. There was one fossil that remained elusive, however: A specimen Strausfeld had read about in a paper by Swedish researchers. They thought they'd seen a fossilized brain.

With only a few hours left in the lab, Strausfeld's colleague, Xiaoya Ma, of the Natural History Museum in London went hunting for the missing specimen. An hour and a half later, she returned with the fossil, an extinct armored creature just a few centimeters long called Fuxianhuia protensa. [25 Amazing Ancient Beasts]

"I looked at the microscope and I think I said something like, 'Whoopee, I think we've got the crown jewels!'" Strausfeld said. Under magnification, he could see the dark brown silhouette of preserved brain nestled in the arthropod's skull.

"It's pretty bloody marvelous, actually. ? I was sitting looking at the thing, going, 'Oh my goodness gracious,'" Strausfeld said. With only five hours left before he had to leave to give a scheduled talk and fly home, Strausfeld got busy photographing the discovery.

An analysis of the brain revealed it to be in three parts, just as the brains of modern insects are in three parts (known as the protocerebrum, deutocerebrum and tritocerebrum). Nerves from the eyes extend into the protocerebrum, nerves from the antennaes feed into the ancient creature's deutocerebrum, and a third nerve root from further back in the body extends into the tritocerebrum. The researchers report the findings in this week's issue of the journal Nature.

This complex, insectlike brain suggests that rather than insects arising from simple branchiopods, today's arthropods descend from a complex-brained ancestor. Branchiopods would later have shed some of this complexity, Strausfeld said, while other crustaceans and insects kept it. In fact, he said, the brain may have evolved to segment into three parts very early on; mammals, including humans, have a forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain, suggesting a common organization.

"Lots of people don't like that idea, sharing a brain with a beetle, but there's good evidence suggesting that you do," Strausfeld said.

Bug brains may seem simple to us, but arthropods are at the base of many a food chain, making them crucial creatures, Strausfeld said. He and his team plan to return to China to hunt out more ancient arthropod brains.

"What we want to do, of course, is go deeper in time," Strausfeld said.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite review

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite review

If you had told us at roughly this time last year that the e-reader race would be heating up going into the 2012 holiday season, we would have disagreed. If anything, 2011 seemed like the beginning of the end. Spurred on by the tablet explosion, companies like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and even Kobo were looking toward that space for inspiration, introducing flagship devices on which reading was just one of many features. Heck, even the readers themselves started to look more tablet-like, with many abandoning of physical keyboards in favor of infrared touchscreens.

But here we are at the end of September, and this product category has never been more exciting. Back in May, Barnes & Noble captured our hearts and midnight reading marathons with the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, a wordy name for a great little device that made reading in bed at night a little easier. (A problem, according to Barnes & Noble, that was tearing the country's families apart.) But don't let it be said that Amazon doesn't believe in the American family. Earlier this month, the company launched the Kindle Paperwhite, the latest addition to a product lineup that has more or less become synonymous with the term "e-reader."

At that launch event, CEO Jeff Bezos described the four years of R&D that went into the front light technology powering that bright screen. It was clear from our hands-on time with the device that, although Amazon is placing extra emphasis on the Fire line these days, it still has a lot invested in the e-reader fight. The sharpened, illuminated text is impressive, and Amazon has gone so far as to describe this as the Kindle it's always wanted to build. That's all well and good, but how does it compare to similar offerings on the market? Is this worth the $119 asking price (with ads)? Let's find out.

Obama Slams House GOP Over Unfinished Business

Carolyn Kaster/AP Photo

President Obama is blasting lawmakers for leaving Washington for a six-week recess ahead of the November election without acting on his proposals to boost job creation and jump-start the economy.

?Without much fanfare, members of the House of Representatives banged a gavel, turned out the lights and rushed home, declaring their work finished for now,? Obama said in his weekly address. ?If that frustrates you, it should ? because their work isn?t finished.?

?Apparently, some members of Congress are more worried about their jobs and their paychecks this campaign season than they are about yours,? he added.

If Congress had ?gotten its act together,? the president said, lawmakers would have extended tax cuts for the middle class and passed a farm bill to aid ranchers and farmers hit by natural disasters.

If Congress had ?done the right thing,? Obama added, lawmakers would have created a veterans? jobs corps to help returning troops find work and acted to help homeowners refinance at lower rates.

Instead, he said, ?Republicans in Congress have dragged their feet. And now they?re gone.?

Obama urged lawmakers to listen to the needs of their constituents during the break and ?come back in November and do this work.?

The president concluded by asking the public for its help.

?If you see them campaigning back home, tell them in person, because there?s been enough talk: It?s time for action,? he said.

Digital saved the legal services star ? Slaw

A few things struck me this week. First, Jordan Furlong?s great piece, ?Back when we used lawyers.? Then the opening of Burberry?s new flagship store in London, England (thanks to my colleague Antony Smith at LawSync for pointing it out to me and suggesting a digital connection to law).

Jordan?s premise is, as the title suggests, that change is constant and that in the lifetime of our parents (and even some of us) how things were done and by whom, when theywere kids, has dramatically changed. What is ?normal? for legal services now or in the past will not be what is ?normal? for legal services in the future.

When I spoke to my law school class on Monday, I told them that as bad as the articling crisis is, they still have far more opportunities in the legal services industry then I did when I was called to the bar in 1991; that this really is the most exciting time to be entering into the legal services industry if you are creative, adaptive and innovative.

How does this tie into Burberry?

Burberry recently opened its largest store (located in central London) which is designed to mimic its website, Burberry World Live. According to The Guardian, ?Remodelling ??.into a bricks-and-mortar version of a website is a clear statement to the world that, for Burberry, digital now comes first??Despite a profit warning that wiped ?1bn off Burberry's market value, the company is a huge success story for British fashion. Having bounced back from job cuts in 2009 to profits of ?166m in 2010, thanks in no small part to a focus on digital growth.?

In a year where law firm profits are in the low single digits and some consultants are suggesting that there are more Dewey LeBoeuf?s to come, what if digital came first for lawyers? Afterall, aren't lawyers the haute couture of the legal services industry? If Burberry can save itself with digital, can?t lawyers do the same?

The CEO of Burberry told The Guardian, "Most of us are very digital in our daily lives now. Burberry is a young team and this is instinctive to us. To the younger generation who are coming into adulthood now, this is all they know."

Can you imagine any managing partner saying this to a reporter?

How cool would it be if she did?

Wouldn?t that firm receive a ton of resumes from??ber?smart and savvy young lawyers eager to join?

If Burberry?s CEO is correct ? and for those of us with children, we know that it is ? this presents an opportunity for lawyers to seize digital growth in the legal services industry; growth that may not only create more roles for law students but also lower overhead costs and increase profits.

Who?ll be the first mover?

Satellite Mobile phone Systems : Guide to Healthy Life ? Live With Fun

Satellite television phone methods are now getting popular because of the need for individuals to communicate actually from the rural corner of the world Satellite phone sales. Communication takes new progress of its personal and mere cable connections as well as radio lines are not able to fulfill the growing requirement of wider insurance.

Satellite phone systems are now necessary, for the reason that cable collections cannot be set to all the parts of the earth and the bandwidth involving radio frequencies, which linked most of the components on the surface of the earth, is tired. The satellite tv for pc phone methods include Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) spoutnik. LEO spoutnik are desired to geo immobile satellites for the reason that latter highlights delay. This particular delay introduced by geo stationary satellite tv for pc can vary with all the distance where it is positioned. The least hold off is about Zero.5 mere seconds and this can be a major disadvantage of geo stationary spoutnik so we decide on LEO spoutnik that have become an element and lot of the satellite tv for pc phone methods.

The system involving satellite cell phones include not only a single Capricorn satellite, but a constellation involving LEO spoutnik, this is done for the reason that LEO spoutnik are placed near to the earth and they also revolve more rapidly than the earth making them hidden at times. So when one satellite tv for pc is moving out of the horizon, another Capricorn satellite arises close by for the cell phone calls.

The technology implemented by the satellite tv for pc phones depends on the type of agencies like GlobalStar methods and Iridium methods. Satellite phone systems also include the various strategies used for the particular transmission of internet data, be it sound or movie signals satellite phone plans.

Some companies like the particular Iridium uses period division a number of access structure to increase the volume of calls that may be attended. It?s got satellite-to-satellite connections as a part of the phone methods thus devices work directly with the spoutnik. Another satellite tv for pc phones program, the GlobalStar accessories new technology called code division a number of access as well as satellites for attending the targeted traffic of cell phone calls.

In this program, satellites are utilized only because relay channels that is, they receive as well as forward cell phone calls to the gateways on the planet and the contact reaches the public switched telephone network. Whatever the technology utilised, the main aim of the satellite tv for pc phone methods and service providers is to retain their customers in contact wherever they?re going.

Arctic sea ice hits smallest extent in satellite era

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? The frozen cap of the Arctic Ocean appears to have reached its annual summertime minimum extent and broken a new record low on Sept. 16, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has reported. Analysis of satellite data by NASA and the NASA-supported NSIDC at the University of Colorado in Boulder showed that the sea ice extent shrunk to 1.32 million square miles (3.41 million square kilometers).

The new record minimum measures almost 300,000 square miles less than the previous lowest extent in the satellite record, set in mid-September 2007, of 1.61 million square miles (4.17 million square kilometers). For comparison, the state of Texas measures around 268,600 square miles.

NSIDC cautioned that, although Sept. 16 seems to be the annual minimum, there's still time for winds to change and compact the ice floes, potentially reducing the sea ice extent further. NASA and NSIDC will release a complete analysis of the 2012 melt season next month, once all data for September are available.

Arctic sea ice cover naturally grows during the dark Arctic winters and retreats when the sun re-appears in the spring. But the sea ice minimum summertime extent, which is normally reached in September, has been decreasing over the last three decades as Arctic ocean and air temperatures have increased. This year's minimum extent is approximately half the size of the average extent from 1979 to 2000. This year's minimum extent also marks the first time Arctic sea ice has dipped below 4 million square kilometers.

"Climate models have predicted a retreat of the Arctic sea ice; but the actual retreat has proven to be much more rapid than the predictions," said Claire Parkinson, a climate scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. "There continues to be considerable inter-annual variability in the sea ice cover, but the long-term retreat is quite apparent."

The thickness of the ice cover is also in decline.

"The core of the ice cap is the perennial ice, which normally survived the summer because it was so thick," said Joey Comiso, senior scientist with NASA Goddard. "But because it's been thinning year after year, it has now become vulnerable to melt."

The disappearing older ice gets replaced in winter with thinner seasonal ice that usually melts completely in the summer.

This year, a powerful cyclone formed off the coast of Alaska and moved on Aug. 5 to the center of the Arctic Ocean, where it churned the weakened ice cover for several days. The storm cut off a large section of sea ice north of the Chukchi Sea and pushed it south to warmer waters that made it melt entirely. It also broke vast extensions of ice into smaller pieces more likely to melt.

"The storm definitely seems to have played a role in this year's unusually large retreat of the ice," Parkinson said. "But that exact same storm, had it occurred decades ago when the ice was thicker and more extensive, likely wouldn't have had as prominent an impact, because the ice wasn't as vulnerable then as it is now."

NASA scientists derive 2012 sea ice concentration data from microwave instruments aboard Defense Meteorological Satellite Program satellites. The wind data in the visualization is from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction.

World stocks edge lower as Fed rally pauses

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks in the United States and Europe slipped o n M onday as investors turned their focus back to the challenges facing the global economy, including Europe's debt crisis.

Spanish bond yields crept up above 6 percent while German Bund prices rose 0.2 percent. The move in Bunds follows steep falls on Friday, when markets across the world reacted to the U.S. Federal Reserve saying it would pump $40 billion a month into the economy until the jobs market improves.

Wall Street surged to nearly five-year highs on the news, a rally that contributed to Monday's modest losses.

"Everyone is still reeling from last week - that is part of it," said Stephen Massocca, managing director at Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco. "But on the other hand, it starts to become increasingly more difficult to pull the trigger on buy orders at these valuations."

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 38.37 points, or 0.28 percent, at 13,555.00. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 3.54 points, or 0.24 percent, at 1,462.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 9.68 points, or 0.30 percent, at 3,174.27.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index of leading European stocks closed down 0.3 percent, pulling back from a 14-month high hit in the previous session. World stocks fell 0.33 percent.

Asian stocks were generally higher overnight, with the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index hitting a 4-1/2 month high. Tokyo markets were closed, although tensions between Japan and China over disputed territory bubbled in the background.

"There is still good upside potential for stocks as we are re-pricing the 'non-break-up' of the euro zone. We've just started to realize all the downside that came from the debt crisis," said Louis Capital Markets trader Jerome Troin-Lajous.

"Now, the main signal we need that would fuel this rally won't be coming from the economic outlook, it will come from the investment flows. A lot of foreign investors have been strongly 'underweight' European stocks and should start to switch out of bonds and out of U.S. equities and into European stocks."

Commodities, including oil, gold and copper - all of which rallied last week - leveled off on Monday. Brent crude oil fell 1.1 percent.

Fund flow data from EPFR showed Europe equity funds posted their biggest net inflows since early May in the week to September 12 as the ECB action encouraged more investors to take on equity risk and move out of conservative debt.

While risk markets should get a boost from the U.S. stimulus plan, organic growth is ultimately needed to sustain a recovery and there are concerns about the economy's ability to generate such growth amid macroeconomic headwinds.

"The Federal Reserve's decision to engage in an open-ended purchase program reinforces the carry trade in the U.S. dollar and risk assets. It is unlikely to produce meaningful change in economic growth, in our view," Jefferies analysts said in a note.

EURO FLAT

The single currency eased in European trade but traded down 0.1 percent against the dollar after weaker-than-expected U.S. data.

"We are due some consolidation. We could trade below $1.30 again but will see $1.35 by year-end. It's a combination of improvements in Europe and deteriorating dollar sentiment," said Daragh Maher, currency strategist at HSBC.

The greenback is expected to remain under pressure in the coming weeks as the effects of the U.S. stimulus plan work their way through the system.

It remained near a seven-month low against a basket of key currencies on Monday and extended losses versus the yen after the Empire State new orders index hit its lowest since November 2010.

The dollar's drop in recent weeks has been in contrast to the euro, which has been the strongest-performing major global currency. Its rise has been supported by the ECB's plan to help lower the borrowing costs of indebted euro zone countries, if and when the countries concerned - chiefly Spain - ask for that help.

ECB member Luc Coene and French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici are both due to speak in London starting at 1500 GMT and could provide fresh information following policymaker meetings in Cyprus over the weekend.

The reversal of Friday's trend in currencies and stocks also fed through into the bond market, with German Bunds, up 16 ticks.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 11/32, the yield at 1.831 percent.

"A lot of good news is priced in and now the market is pondering whether or when Spain might require a bailout," said Rabobank rate strategist Richard McGuire. "The realization is dawning it might not be rushing."

Reflecting the uncertainty, Spanish 10-year bond yields rose back above 6 percent. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has said he would not accept a rescue that dictated spending cuts.

"The market has priced in an actual bailout and the longer Spain prevaricates, the greater the risk the market will strong-arm them into accepting a support package," McGuire said.

Kate Gosselin Posts Pic of Daughter in High Heels, Twitter Fans Freak Out

Kate Gosselin tweeted a photo of her 11-year-old daughter Mady trying on her high heels this weekend, and many of her Twitter followers were not big fans.

Much like Jessica Simpson's baby bikini photo, some people say she went too far.

In Kate's case, the seemingly innocent pic shows Mady's bare legs in mom's heels:

Some stood up for the reality star turned Fashion Week runway model.

"I guess I'm truly NOT SEEIN what they see! Nothin abt that sent off any alarm 4me. Just a kid in heels," one defender said. What's your take? Tell us below!

Survey: Indians disappointed with economy, gov't

NEW DELHI (AP) ? As their economy slows and the government is hammered by corruption scandals, Indians are increasingly dejected about their country's future, according to a survey released Monday by the Pew Research Center.

Only 38 percent of Indians were satisfied with the direction that the country had taken, a 13-percentage-point drop from last year and the largest such dip in 17 countries surveyed in both 2011 and 2012. India's satisfaction trails China and Brazil but still exceeds the United States, where only 29 percent were happy about their country's state of affairs. The survey found that 82 percent of Chinese and 53 percent of Brazilians were satisfied with the overall direction of their respective countries.

About eight in 10 Indians interviewed said the shape of the economy, unemployment and rising prices were "very big problems," the report said.

"In a world where the Americans, the Europeans and even the Chinese have reason to worry about their economies, it is the Indians who have lost the greatest faith in their economic fortunes," it added.

India's economy grew a disappointing 5.5 percent in the last quarter ending June, a sharp slowdown from the 8 percent growth in the same period a year ago.

The disappointing state of the economy reflects the complete disarray of the Congress party-led government, which has been embroiled in a host of corruption scandals. Opposition parties paralyzed Parliament in protest, leaving the government unable to act on economic issues.

In the session that wrapped up last week, lawmakers spent more time shouting at each other than conducting legislative business, mainly while focusing on a scandal over the sale of coalfields without competitive bidding.

Indians are also gloomy about the economic future and only 45 percent think the economy will pick up next year, down from 60 percent in 2011. The government is seen as the biggest culprit behind the poor economic scenario.

Despite that, nearly two-thirds of Indians think their personal finances are in good shape. Half said they were better off now than five years ago and two-thirds said their own standard of living was better than their parents' at the same age. But two-thirds also feared that their children will have a hard time getting better jobs and making more money.

Crime, corruption and persistent electricity shortages were also seen as huge challenges.

The polls for the Pew Global Attitudes Project were nationally representative surveys conducted in March and April by 26,210 telephone or in-person interviews in 21 countries.

In India, 4,018 adults were interviewed in person and the data were weighted to reflect the rural-urban proportion of the citizenry. The Indian portion of the study had a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.

While India's relations with Pakistan, China and Iran have become increasingly important, large portions of the two-thirds of Indians living in rural areas were indifferent about foreign countries and leaders.
