Analysts: New software won't save Blackberry maker (AP)

NEW YORK ? In the trend-setting North American market, BlackBerry phones have gone from must-have messaging toys to outdated clunkers _all in the space of a few years. The new CEO of Research In Motion Ltd., the company behind the phones, says it can claw its way back to the top with new software, but analysts are deeply doubtful.

The two co-CEOs of the Canadian company resigned Sunday. The new CEO is Thorsten Heins, who was the company's chief operating officer.

Even though the company is in deep trouble and has seen its stock price fall 89 percent from the all-time high it hit in 2008, Heins said Monday that his appointment means "no seismic change" for the company. He's confident in the course laid out by his predecessors, which hinges on the software revamp.

The new software is called BlackBerry 10, and it's due in new smartphones late this year. For BlackBerry fans, it should be a welcome upgrade. It's based on QNX, an industrial-grade operating system that runs devices that need to be very reliable, like core Internet routers and anesthesia monitoring devices.

That means it's a stable platform that can give BlackBerrys a new look and new capabilities. BlackBerry 10 will have a completely new user interface, built from the ground up for touchscreen input and "very fluid," Heins said in an interview.

But it amounts to BlackBerry tossing out its own quirky, outdated software, first introduced in 1999, and adopting a slick, touch-oriented operating system, much like Android, Google Inc.'s popular smartphone software, and the software on the iPhone.

Heins said BlackBerry 10 is "extremely competitive" and insisted that RIM is "not in a catch-up race" with the makers other mobile operating systems. He emphasizes that BlackBerry 10 will offer "multitasking," or the ability to run several applications at the same time. This is something Google Inc.'s Android software and the iPhone operating system offer in a limited fashion.

Phone software developers generally stay away from full multitasking because it can shorten battery life considerably. Improved multitasking was one of the hallmarks of Palm Inc.'s webOS when it launched in 2009, but that didn't save it from obscurity.

One thing that could entice buyers: the new software will expand the choice of applications greatly, by running ones written for Android. There are hundreds of thousands of such apps, but it's unclear how many of them will run on BlackBerry 10 without modification.

The PlayBook, RIM's tablet computer, already runs an early version of BlackBerry 10. RIM had huge hopes for the device when it put it on sale in April, but quickly had to slash the price. In December, the tablets that originally cost $500 were selling for $200, below the cost of making them. RIM wrote off $485 million worth of inventory.

The PlayBook also illustrates the big challenge RIM is facing switching operating systems. It launched without an email program, apparently because it's very difficult to get QNX to work with the RIM servers that shunt emails around.

Application developers will also have to relearn their tools to write programs for BlackBerry 10, which could prove a big hurdle.

"The platform risks suffering from the same chicken and egg problem as many others_ users won't buy a device without any apps, and developers won't develop for a platform without any users," said Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum.

But the main problem analysts see with BlackBerry 10 is that the phones are set to come out so late. They were originally slated for early this year, but pushed to late this year. The company said that was because the right chips weren't available. When they come out, it will be more than five years since Apple released the first iPhone and set a new standard for phone software.

And even if BlackBerry 10 makes the phones more competitive, that doesn't mean it can reverse RIM's fortunes. Analyst Tavis McCourt noted that the history of phone makers who fall on hard times and try to turn things around is not encouraging.

"In fact, it is hard to think of a single successful case in the smartphone era," he wrote.

No injuries as tornadoes reported in Ark. (AP)

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? Tornadoes were spotted in Arkansas as storms moved through parts of the South and Midwest on Sunday night, but there were no reports of any injuries.

The National Weather Service said it received reports of possible tornadoes in Arkansas, Dallas, Lonoke, Prairie and Cleveland counties Sunday night. The storms also brought hail and strong winds as they moved through parts of Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois and Mississippi.

The storms were part of a system threatening parts of the South and Midwest overnight. A tornado watch was in effect for parts of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee early Monday.

National Weather Service forecaster Marlene Mickelson in Memphis, Tenn., told The Associated Press that the Memphis area had some damage from winds that reached 60 to 70 mph.

"Unfortunately it's going to continue across most of western Tennessee and northern Mississippi through most of the night," Mickelson said.

The storms were part of a system threatening parts of the South and Midwest overnight. Tornado warnings were in effect for parts of Tennessee and Alabama early Monday. A tornado watch was in effect for parts of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Memphis-area news stations closely tracked the storms as they approached that city, but it appeared to have been spared.

Chinese fire on Tibetan protest, 1 dead: advocacy group (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Chinese troops fired on thousands of Tibetans protesting in southwestern Sichuan province Monday, killing at least one and wounding more, two overseas advocacy groups said.

Free Tibet, a London-based group that campaigns for Tibetan self-determination, said the protesting Tibetans gathered at an intersection in Luhuo, about 590 km (370 miles) west of Sichuan's capital of Chengdu, and marched on government offices, where security forces opened fire about midday.

The Tibetans were protesting about arrests earlier in the day in connection with the distribution of pamphlets carrying the slogan "Tibet Needs Freedom" and declaring that more Tibetans were ready to stage self-immolations to challenge Chinese rule, the group said in an emailed statement.

One resident -- a 49-year-old Tibetan man called Yonten -- was shot dead by government forces and another 30 or so residents were injured, said Free Tibet.

Another advocacy group, the International Campaign for Tibet, said three people were killed and about nine injured when police fired into the crowd in Luhuo, which is called Drango or Draggo by Tibetans.

"Others were injured in the crackdown, including through beatings by police, following the dissemination of leaflets in Drango saying that Tibetans should not celebrate New Year due to the self-immolations and situation in Tibet," Kate Saunders, the London-based communications director for the International Campaign, said in an emailed statement that cited several unnamed sources.

This year the main Tibetan traditional new year celebrations begin on February 22.

"Due to fears for their safety, Tibetans who were injured are unable to seek treatment at the local government-run hospital," said the International Campaign for Tibet.

Chinese security forces have been on edge after 16 incidents of self-immolation by ethnic Tibetans over the last year in response to growing resentment of Beijing's controls on religion. Some have called for the return of the Dalai Lama, their exiled Buddhist leader.

The mountainous western part of Sichuan province where the recent unrest has been concentrated is dominated by ethnic Tibetans and lies next to the official Tibetan Autonomous Region.

The reports could not be immediately verified. A staff member of the county public security bureau said he was not aware of any incident.

"There's nothing happening. I don't know about anything," he said, before hanging up.

The two advocacy groups said Tibetans from nearby areas were continuing to converge on Luhuo Monday.

China's Foreign Ministry has branded the self-immolators "terrorists" and has said the Dalai Lama, whom it condemns as a supporter of violent separatism, should take the blame.

Digital lockers a growing piracy concern (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Digital storage services like Megaupload, which was accused of criminal copyright violations on Thursday, play a small but growing role in a broader piracy problem that continues to evolve and dog the entertainment industry.

Some 3 million Americans every month used Megaupload, which is among the largest digital lockers, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said. Other entertainment executives said that number surged when other sites popular with digital pirates, such as LimeWire, were taken down.

"When we look at piracy behavior and uncompensated theft of music, a significant portion of consumer behavior migrates toward these locker sites" after shutdowns, said Victoria Bassetti, a music industry consultant and former anti-piracy chief at record label EMI.

"Anecdotally, when we have pre-release leaks, the first week there is a massive amount of consumer trade that goes directly to Megaupload's door."

Peer-to-peer systems like BitTorrent, which have little central coordination and are harder to stop, still have about three times as much usage among consumers as digital lockers, said NPD market researcher Russ Crupnick.

Only about 3 percent of the U.S. Internet audience relied on digital storage for legitimate purposes or piracy in the third quarter, he said.

Megaupload and its ilk may be a bigger factor in video piracy because movies take much longer to download via peer-to-peer networks, Crupnick said. Digital lockers allow anyone to upload, store and distribute links to most forms of electronic content.

The U.S. Justice Department released an indictment Thursday accusing Megaupload's founders and other officers of criminal conspiracy, arguing that they encouraged copyright violations and in some cases copied protected content themselves. Four people involved with the site were arrested in New Zealand.

The indictment cited internal emails referring to piracy and Megaupload's policy of rewarding users whose content was downloaded most often, which prosecutors said encouraged the distribution of prime Hollywood fare.

An attorney for the company said Friday that the site merely allowed users to upload material and that it would fight the charges.

RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy said that lockers were "generally the fastest growing form of Internet piracy."

Like other shutdowns, the interruption of Megaupload will send some pirates to rivals but should encourage others to buy or rent content legally, Lamy said.

"The realistic objective is not to eliminate piracy but to make it as inconvenient as possible," he said. "Some of the users you peel off."

The takedown enraged some Internet activists, who launched denial-of-service attacks that temporarily rendered websites of the Justice Department, FBI and big entertainment companies unreachable.

Some of them argued that the arrests showed that there was no need for laws like those that were withdrawn from consideration in Congress this week that would have made it much easier to block access to sites accused of fostering piracy.

But entertainment executives said that they would try again to pass such bills because they are aimed more at attacking demand rather than supply. In addition, many file-sharing sites do not have Megaupload's ties to the United States or allied countries.

"It is not hard necessarily to do something in New Zealand, but it is hard to get people in Russia and China," Bassetti said.

The Dawn of Social Lobbying

MoneyThe word ?lobbyist? surely doesn?t have the best connotation in the world. Depending on your reading of the definition, it generally signifies an attempt to influence government decisions, traditionally by targeting legislators or regulators. What isn?t often taken into consideration, however, is that while there are lobbyists in dark suits roaming the halls of Congress funded by entities such as big oil and pharmaceutical companies, ?lobbying? is also conducted by nonprofit groups funded by different kinds of special interests. We think of efforts, however, as ?activism,? but at the end of the day, they're just another form of lobbying. Now, a new form of ?lobbying? has emerged, but instead corporate checks or individuals donations, the currency has shifted from cash to social connections, where financial power will be trumped by network power: ?social lobbying.?

Non-public Cash Investing-how To Get The Greatest Use Out Of This ...

Personal cash investing involves coping with real estate firms, leisure, retail and several other different businesses. It mainly entails events: the borrower and the lender. The lender becomes the investor.

The borrower receives money based on the value of actual property owned by him. Private individuals, trusts and pension funds can attempt their luck on personal cash investing. Substantial knowledge and experience of belief deed investing is required and mostly particular person buyers are good at it.

Everyone desires their cash to develop and because of this this form of investing is such a fascinating type of investing now. First, their funding in real property will all the time pay off. Secondly, it would give common income derived from the month-to-month dividend distribution scheme and thirdly, greater outcomes than those available from investing in shares and bonds. There?s something called investor eligibility that you want to meet for this type of investing, and that is determined when you meet the minimal web value requirements.

The amount of investment that is being asked, the worth of the property that is pledged, description of the property, negotiation of suitable terms from either occasion and the usage of funds whether to construct the property or to renovate. This eventually is a risky business so it is very important associate your investment with known construction brands.

Before lending money, a number of issues are taken into account and one among it?s to calculate the value of the real estate piece. The liquid value of the collateral minus debt and liabilities is what investors take a look at whereas utilizing personal money investing.

Again, it can?t be emphasized enough: concentrate on one area of investing, and stick with that. For example, both focus your efforts on actual estate, the stock market, mutual funds, etc. do not try to study every thing about all of them. Observe these important ideas, and if you have decided to use personal money investing, you?ll make a fortune with your investing efforts.

Anti-Taliban Afghan tribal leader killed in mosque

(AP) ? Afghan authorities say a prominent anti-Taliban tribal leader has been assassinated while praying inside a mosque in the southern city of Kandahar.

Armed insurgents entered the mosque and gunned down Mohammad Nahim Agha Mama as he prayed Tuesday morning. The Kandahar governor's office condemned the killing as "an anti-Islamic and antihuman act" that desecrated a place of worship.

It said the Pashtun tribal leader and local council member of Dand district was well-known for encouraging peace and urging his followers not to join the Taliban.

Taliban insurgents have assassinated hundreds of Afghan government officials and supporters in recent years, seeking to sap public confidence in President Hamid Karzai's administration.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Avalanches caused by heavy snowfall have killed at least 14 people in a mountainous region in northeastern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday.

Rescue crews were trying to reach the remote areas of Badakhshan province where a number of houses were reported to have been destroyed on Monday, said Shams ul-Rahman deputy provincial governor.

Between 6-9 feet (2-3 meters) of snow have fallen in the area, making roads to the provincial capital of Faizabad impassable.

"We have reports of at least 14 dead and several others injured," ul-Rahman said, adding that several other people were missing.

Avalanches present a constant danger in many parts of Afghanistan during the winter.

In February 2010, an avalanche killed at least 171 people near the 12,700-foot (3,800-meter) high Salang Pass, a major route through the Hindu Kush mountains that connects the Afghan capital of Kabul to the north of the country.

Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai urged the Taliban to allow teams conducting a polio vaccination campaign access to areas under the insurgents' control.

Afghanistan is one of just three nations where polio remains endemic. The two others are Nigeria and neighboring Pakistan.

"Whoever prevents the polio vaccination is the enemy of our children's future," Karzai said in a statement.

Last year, the government registered 80 new cases of polio, most of them in the restive southern provinces. That figure was three times higher than the total for 2010.

The polio virus, which usually infects children in unsanitary conditions, attacks the central nervous system, sometimes causing paralysis, muscular atrophy, deformation and, in some cases, death.

"Karzai called on the armed opposition to the government to allow the medical teams to vaccinate the children and rescue them from polio," the government statement said.

Karzai said that although millions of Afghan children had been inoculated in successive vaccination campaigns, many remained outside the reach of health officials because of the security situation in areas in the south and along the border with Pakistan.

Karzai's appeal came just days after another country in the region, India, celebrated a full year since its last reported case of polio, a major victory in a global eradication effort.

The Daily News says a school official became suspicious of the forged death certificate. A special investigator's report says it had different fonts that were misaligned.

Court records show Joan Barnett pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in the case this fall. She was also fired from her job as a parent coordinator at the Manhattan High School of Hospitality Management.

She allegedly told school officials her daughter died in Costa Rica so she could spend 2? weeks there in March 2010.

A Costa Rican government official later confirmed the document was a fake, noting it dated from 2005.

Barnett's lawyer declined to comment.

Prep golf | Lakewood Ranch?s Ramsey Touchberry commits to Florida

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Though he?s just a sophomore, Ramsey Touchberry already has his college picked.

The Lakewood Ranch High golf standout has verbally committed to play for the University of Florida. Gators head coach Buddy Alexander made the decision easy for the 2011 Herald Boys Golfer of the Year.

?Before I had seen UF, I went to meet with Auburn coaches and Wake Forest,? Touchberry said. ?And then I went to UF, and the practice facilities don?t really stand out as a strong point. ... But the one thing that was far above the other two was the coach. Buddy Alexander, who?s the head men?s coach at UF, is phenomenal and has been there some 20 years. He?s played in the Masters, and he?s won the U.S. Am, and he has so many experiences.?

Touchberry also is impressed with the players Alexander has produced, including PGA Tour star Camilo Villegas.

?Almost half the people he coaches go on to be some kind of pro,? Touchberry said. ?And when I met with him, the information that he had to give me was so much more than what other coaches had to offer.?

Touchberry?s announcement comes on the heels of fantastic summer and fall seasons. Individually, he medaled in a local qualifier before firing a 295 total to tie for 31st in the Florida State Amateur.

He also finished eighth in the 57th Florida Boys Junior Amateur Championship this past summer.

Then Touchberry led the Mustangs to the Class 2A state title, the first for a Manatee County public high school. He fired a team-best 151 at the two-day, 36-hole state final on a difficult El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club and tied for fifth overall. He shot a 3-under par 69 in the 2A-Region 5 tourney at Bent Tree Country Club.

?I?ve been playing good for awhile now, and it does pay off,? he said. ?It?s a great way to close out a good year.?

Most recently, Touchberry battled against seasoned college players and top-notch amateurs at the prestigious Dixie Amateur. The event concluded in late December with Touchberry posting a 291, good for 48th.

?I was 1-under through three rounds, which I was very happy with,? he said. ?The last day I kind of faltered a bit. ... t was similar to the Florida Am, but it had a lot better competition.?

With his future lined up, though, Touchberry isn?t letting himself get complacent.

?You have to worry about not letting it slip, because you already know you are going there,? Touchberry said. ?But also, it helps in relieving some of the pressure that if you have a bad tournament here or there, you aren?t going to fall off someone?s radar.?

For now, Touchberry said he plans to play Florida Junior Tour events prior to a summer schedule that includes trying to qualify for the Florida Amateur and U.S. Junior, among other tournaments.

Wahlberg: Being a dad is the most important role

By Ree Hines

Forget the tough guy talk! Actor Mark Wahlberg was all about the parenthood and potty talk during his Monday morning visit to TODAY.

Sure, he may be best known for his action and intrigue characters, like his part in the upcoming heist thriller "Contraband," but as it turns out, those roles aren't the?vital ones as far as Wahlberg's concerned. He prefers to focus on his daddy duties.

"Usually my youngest son wakes me up about 5:30, (and) drags me out of the bed," the father of four said of his typical day-off routine. "He wears a pull-up, but he doesn't like to pee in it. So I got to help him get the pull-up off to go to the bathroom. Then will sit down and watch cartoons and get a snack, and wait for the other kids to get up. The two boys like to beat me up, to put their masks on and beat me up. And then it's just a whole day with the kids."

Which means basketball, karate, skateboarding -- the usual stuff, the important stuff.

"If I succeed as a businessman but fail as a father, then it's all been for nothing," Wahlberg said. "That's by far the most important role that I'll ever play in my life -- being a parent and being a husband."

It's a role he's always working hard to perfect. And one that takes constant vigilance. ?

"When my son says to me, 'Daddy, go out of the room. I want to watch this by myself,' I know he's up to something," Wahlberg explained. "So I'll walk out one door and come around the other way, and he's on the counter trying to grab the scissors or the knife. He got a hold of his antibiotics and ate three of them. Of course, I go into a panic attack and call the pediatrician, who's on vacation, and he says, 'Don't worry. The worst he'll get is diarrhea. He'll be fine.' And I'm like, 'What are you doing?' 'They taste good, Daddy.' Cause they're chewable. My youngest son is the one I really have to watch."

But Wahlberg wants his kids to keep an eye on him, too. In particular, he wants them to get a good look at (and get a lesson from) a painful process he's currently putting himself through -- the removal of a half-dozen tattoos.

"(The tattoos) all have meaning to me, but you know it's both personal and professional,"?the actor?told TODAY host Matt Lauer. "I don't want to have my kids getting tattoos.... I?m taking my two oldest kids with me to the procedure, where they can see how painful that is."

That's one way to keep them from following dad's?tattooed tradition.

See Wahlberg's on-screen take on fatherhood -- as well as his take on smuggling counterfeit money -- when "Contraband" opens nationwide Friday, Jan. 13.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's rivals have one more chance to bruise the front-runner ahead of Tuesday's voting during a Sunday morning faceoff just hours after he largely brushed aside their criticism in the opening round of a weekend debate doubleheader.

The six GOP hopefuls are set to spar one final time before voters go to the polls Tuesday in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary.

They met onstage in nearby Manchester less than 12 hours earlier. That Saturday night contest left Romney's rivals squabbling among themselves and unable to knock him off stride.

Romney, in turn, largely ignored his fellow Republicans and focused instead on President Barack Obama.

"His policies have made the recession deeper and his policies have made the recovery more tepid," he said, despite a declining unemployment rate and the creation of 200,000 jobs last month.

Over the course of the lively 90-minute debate, there were attacks aplenty as Romney's GOP opponents vied to emerge as his principal rival in the primaries ahead. Romney won an eight-vote victory in the Iowa caucuses last Tuesday and is far ahead in the pre-primary polls in New Hampshire.

That leaves his pursuers little time to stop his rise, and, all but conceding New Hampshire to the former governor of next-door Massachusetts, they're mostly focusing their efforts on the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21.

Romney, who often touts his business background, was attacked in the opening minutes of the debate.

Rick Santorum went first, dismissing him as a mere manager.

"Being a president is not a CEO. You've got to lead and inspire," he said.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich followed a few moments later, referring to published accounts that described how some workers were laid off after Bain Capital, the firm Romney once led, invested in their companies and sought to turn them around by cutting staff and firing workers.

He said Romney should be judged on the basis of whether "on balance, were people better off or worse off by this style of management."

In reply, Romney said Bain had created 100,000 jobs, and that a businessman's experience was far better to fix the economy than a career spent in Washington.

"I'm very proud of the fact that the two enterprises I led were successful," he said, referring to Bain and another firm.

More than an hour later, Romney turned one question about his vision for the country into an attack on Obama that is part of his standard campaign speech. While his rivals stood by silently, he accused the president of trying to turn the United States into a "European-style welfare state."

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, meanwhile, assailed Santorum as a "big government person," an allegation the former Pennsylvania senator disputed. Santorum, a social conservative, finished a close second to Romney in Iowa this week, with Paul coming in third.

Gingrich was fourth in Iowa, Texas Gov. Rick Perry fifth and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has since quit the race, finished last. Jon Huntsman, a former governor of Utah, did not compete there, putting his effort into trying to make a good showing in New Hampshire.

The skirmishes reflected the state of the race: Romney the acknowledged front-runner under attack from his rivals, who face an increasingly urgent need to emerge as his main conservative challenger.

Saturday's debate at Saint Anselm College was the first in more than three weeks, and the first since Bachmann's departure.

Olbermann to join Current election coverage soon (AP)

NEW YORK ? Despite his absence from early primary coverage, Current TV's Keith Olbermann will soon be part of the act.

In a tweet posted Sunday, the volatile anchor of the "Countdown" show said he would be "running the election coverage of Current" after Tuesday's New Hampshire primary. On Monday, a Current representative confirmed Olbermann would host future coverage.

Olbermann was missing from last week's coverage of the Iowa caucuses. This led to reports of a feud between Olbermann and the network, where he has been an executive and star for less than a year.

It remains unclear what format election night coverage will adopt with Olbermann participating ? a special edition of "Countdown" or one of Current's "Politically Direct" election specials, featuring Current personalities as well as network co-founder Al Gore.

Ford plans to open research lab in Silicon Valley

Hoping to tap cutting-edge technology and talent, Ford Motor will join the ranks of carmakers that have opened research centers in Silicon Valley, the company announced Friday.

Ford's move follows General Motors and a host of foreign carmakers that already have local outposts with researchers working on new advances in automotive technology, emphasizing computer science and Internet communications.

Silicon Valley also is the home of electric-carmaker Tesla Motors, but automotive research here goes beyond the development of batteries and vehicles that run on alternative power.

"Obviously, a lot of trends are being born here. The car companies want to get to know about these trends as early as possible," said Sven Beiker, executive director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford University.

For example, a recent report from the Gartner tech research firm predicted that by 2016, many consumers will consider whether a car has "in-vehicle Web access" as a key criterion for deciding on a new automotive purchase. Other experts say cars will increasingly rely on Internet connectivity to deliver information and services to their owners. The Internet also will be key to collecting and analyzing a variety of data on engine performance, traffic and even weather.

Ford plans to open its new research office in Palo Alto in the first quarter of this year, according to a statement from the company. Ford CEO Alan Mullally is expected

to discuss the company's plans in detail during a speech at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.

The company would not disclose the size or exact location of its planned Silicon Valley outpost. A spokesman said it is likely to employ fewer than 50 people or "about what you'd expect from a startup."

In a statement, Ford said the center will focus on research topics such as the use of open-source software and hardware to develop new services, and use of sensor data from individual vehicles to track weather and road conditions.

"Silicon Valley represents a deep and dynamic technology neighborhood and is far from Dearborn," the Michigan city where Ford is headquartered, said K. Venkatesh Prasad, a Ford research executive who will oversee the Palo Alto office.

By locating in Silicon Valley, he added, "our new lab will allow us to scout new technologies and partners in their own environment."

Similar thinking has led other car companies to open offices here, according to Beiker, whose program at Stanford works with industry partners to study the future of the automobile.

General Motors, which is Ford's chief U.S. rival, also has an advanced technology office in Palo Alto, while Volkswagen recently moved its Electronic Research Laboratory from Palo Alto to larger quarters in Belmont. BMW has a technology office in Mountain View, and Beiker said several major Asian car manufacturers also have offices or researchers based in the area.

Scientists helps find structure of gene-editing protein

ScienceDaily (Jan. 5, 2012) ? In the two and a half years since Adam Bogdanove, professor at Iowa State University in the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, along with Matthew Moscou, a former graduate student in that department, discovered how a class of proteins from plant pathogenic bacteria find and bind specific sequences in plant genomes, researchers worldwide have moved fast to use this discovery.

Last year it was first shown that the proteins can be fused to DNA modifying enzymes to manipulate genes and gene functions by Bogdanove and colleagues at the University of Minnesota, led by former ISU professor Dan Voytas, and another group led by Iowa State University faculty member Bing Yang, professor in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology.

The fused proteins are called TAL effector nucleases, or TALENs, and can be used to better understand gene function in model plant and animal systems, to improve traits in livestock and plants, and even to treat human genetic disorders, according to Bogdanove.

The fact that these proteins can be readily engineered to bind DNA sequences of choice has resulted in a flurry of publications that demonstrate their utility in many different types of cells, including human stem cells.

Largely because of the advent of TALENs, the journal Nature Methods last month named gene editing with engineered nucleases as 2011 Method of the Year.

Now, Bogdanove and researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle have taken the next step by determining the 3-D structure of a TAL effector bound to DNA.

The findings were posted this week on Science Express, a website for early release of papers of exceptional interest that are due to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Science.

The first author of the study is Amanda Mak, a postdoctoral researcher in the Hutchinson center. Andres Cernadas, a post doctoral researcher in Bogdanove's lab also contributed.

By visualizing the shape of TAL effectors and how they physically interact with the DNA double helix, scientists can now better understand the biochemistry that underlies their ability to recognize and stick to specific DNA sequences.

This will in turn improve scientists' ability to target the proteins to different locations in a genome and to better predict and prevent their binding to unintended, off-target sites, according to Bogdanove.

The structure itself is also interesting from a basic biology standpoint. "It is really quite beautiful," he says, "So far there is nothing else in nature quite like it."

To determine the structure, Bogdanove collaborated with Fred Hutchinson scientists Barry Stoddard, an expert in protein DNA interactions, and Phil Bradley, a computational biologist. Led by Stoddard, the group completed the project in just over a year by using a unique combination of traditional X-ray crystallography and novel computer-based modeling method.

Girl's 'Jewels of Hope' raise thousands for cancer research

SEATTLE - A 14-year-old Poulsbo girl surprised herself and doctors at the University of Washington when she set a goal to fight cancer with "style."

Greer Gates set out to raise $5,000 - by selling her "Jewels of Hope." But as KOMO News discovered, she not only doubled her goal, she's created hope.

Greer, 14, made thousands of necklaces and bracelets.

When KOMO News first interviewed her in September, she said every penny of sales from her "Jewels of Hope" are for ovarian and breast cancer research. She dreamed of raising $5,000.

But this week she counted her holiday sales - and was shocked to learn, she raised not $5,000 - but $10,000. On Thursday she gave UW cancer researchers a whopping check.

"I just felt like I'm making a big difference, and I should keep doing this because so many more people need their cancer cured, and we need to stop the disease," says Greer.

Judy Granlee-Greer, her mom, says, "When we saw what she sold this year we were speechless - and that she was able to give the hospital that kind of money was just unbelievable."

"She's made an important contribution - it's very impressive," says the UW's Dr. Swisher.

Says Greer: "It's really weird, 'cause I've worked almost half my life on this."

Greer's passion began when she was 7 years old. That's when she learned that a dear family friend, Nancy, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Greer felt so helpless - but realized just because she was a kid, didn't mean she couldn't help.

"That, I think, speaks to Nancy and the type of person she was and how she affects other people," says Greer's mom, who still gets choked up when she talks about her old friend.

Nancy lost her battle with cancer,

But Greer keeps her memory and hope alive. In the past seven years she's raised nearly $40,000 in jewelry sales.

"She would just be so proud," says Greer. "And she would say, 'That's my friend. That's my friend Greer, and I love her to death.'"

Greer says she only surpassed her goal because of the support of family and friends. Her pieces range from $5 to $12.

Time cloaking: how scientists opened a hidden gap in time

Scientists say they have mastered 'temporal cloaking' ? manipulating light in a way that makes it appear as if 50 trillionths of a second never happened. Now, they'll try to expand the gap.

Forget wrapping an object ? say, Harry Potter ? in a cloak of invisibility. How about hiding an event using time?

What may be a distant dream for this year's Indianapolis Colts has been demonstrated for the first time by a team of physicists at Cornell University.

The approach is dubbed "temporal cloaking," and it builds on experiments researchers have already conducted to demonstrate that they can hide objects from view.?

Indeed, scientists had already succeeded at "spatial cloaking," which involves bending light around an object in such a way as to make it appear invisible. Temporal cloaking involves interrupting light to create a seeming gap in time in which an event can be hidden.

At this point, the time gap that the scientists created is so brief ? about 50 trillionths of a second ? that practical implications are barely a gleam in anyone's eye. But the researchers are interested in trying to lengthen the amount of time a beam's gap remains open, says Alexander Gaeta, who led the team reporting the results in the Jan. 5 issue of the journal Nature.

In essence, the team briefly turned off a laser beam in a way that instruments receiving the beam could not detect. An observer would have no clue that the beam had blinked, and so would have no evidence of anything that happened to the beam in that 50 trillionths of a second.

University of Rochester physicists Robert Boyd and Zhimin Shi, who are not members of Dr. Gaeta's team, liken the phenomenon to traffic at a railroad crossing.

The crossing gate falls, interrupting traffic (the laser beam) as the commuter train passes. From the perspective of the train, for a brief period there is no traffic and it can freely pass (the hidden event). Yet once the gate rises, traffic resumes and speeds up. To an observer a mile or two away, the flow of traffic shows no evidence of interruption ? no evidence from traffic flow that a train had ever been there.

How did the team open a gap in the laser beam?

The researchers took advantage of the fact that when light travels through a material, different colors travel at different speeds. To alter colors in a segment of the laser beam, the researchers used a laser-based device dubbed a time lens.

Typical glass lenses bend light, changing its distribution in three-dimensional space. Time lenses, on the other hand, "do really funny things" to light, altering its traits for a defined period of time, Gaeta says.

In this case, the team's modified time lenses briefly gave two adjoining segments of the green beam a red and a blue hue. When the segments passed through a specially designed length of optical fiber, the red light slowed and the blue light accelerated.?

The difference opened a gap in the beam ? no light ? that lasted about 50 trillionths of a second.

Coming out the other side, the researchers reversed the process, slowing the blue and speeding the red, then passing them through another time lens to returning the beam to its original green color, leaving no hint of its temporary alteration.

Well, almost no hint.

To see if their technique could hide an event from view, scientists shot a different laser beam into the gap. Usually, when two laser beams interact, the effects are easy to spot. In this case, though, the effects were more than 10 times weaker than they would have been if there had been no temporal cloaking.

For now, much work will focus on gaining a clearer understanding of the physics involved and how to take advantage of them, says Dr. Shi of Rochester.

Still, he adds, the basic physics of spatial cloaking and temporal cloaking are mathematically similar.

With the addition of a cloaking approach that "plays tricks with time" to the other approach of playing tricks with light's distribution around an object in space, "hopefully we can find an easier way to create effective cloaking."

Windows 8's new 'Refresh' and 'Reset' options get detailed

And just like that, your next Windows-based PC becomes more like a phone. We'd heard during our early playtime with Windows 8 that the furniture would be arranged a little differently when it came to resetting and refreshing one's machine, and now we're being given a closer look at what exactly that means. Finalized builds of Win8 will offer a pair of related features; 'Reset your PC' will allow you to remove all personal data, apps, and settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows, while 'Refresh your PC' enables your to keep all personal data, Metro style apps, and important settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows. The goal here? To give end-users a single button to press when you just want "everything to be fixed." An interesting approach, no doubt, but one we're probably better off having than not. We're still many months out from securing a final copy of this OS on our desk, but those interested in every little tidbit -- including a new method for creating a bootable USB flash drive -- can visit the links below.

CONFIRMED. After hitting a home run with Paranormal Activity 3, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned that both Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman will be returning to direct Paranormal Activity 4 for Paramount Pictures. I have yet to confirm if the duo are in final talks or if the ink has dried*, and have asked Mr. Disgusting to dig into this for me.

*To clarify - I meant they're at least in final talks.

The studio slated the return of Katie, Kristi and the not-so-friendly ghost Toby for October 19, 2012.

Joost and Schulman co-directed Catfish independently before it was acquired by Universal. They then boarded the mega-franchise created by San Diego director Oren Peli. PA 3 has made over $200 million at the box office worldwide. The entire Paranormal Activity franchise has pulled in approximately $577 worldwide at the box office alone making it a near billion dollar franchise when you include home video.
